This webinar shares how using free book clubs, webinars, and other resources, healthcare HR leaders can amplify their people strategy. “Leader Inspired Work” is a book and set of materials published by Laudio, based on our data working with 10,000 frontline leaders across all departments in health systems. We will look at five HR priorities:

Joel Ray is Chief Clinical Advisor at Laudio, where he brings a CNO perspective to a wide range of cross-functional initiatives and is a key contributor to Laudio Insights. With 42 years in healthcare and over 23 years in executive leadership roles, including Chief Nursing Officer and Chief Operating Officer, Joel brings a wealth of operational leadership experience to Laudio. He understands the needs of executives and frontline leaders. He is passionate and pragmatic about empowering frontline leaders to focus on what matters most: building meaningful connections with their teams to enhance engagement and secure the delivery of high quality, safe care and an excellent patient experience. Previously the Vice President of Patient Care Services and Chief Nursing Officer at UNC Rex Healthcare under his guidance, the hospital obtained its 4th Magnet designation, CMS 5 Star, and Leapfrog A ratings. He served 26 years in the U.S. Air Force Nurse Corps, retiring with the rank of Colonel. He earned a BSN from Arkansas State University and MSN from Arizona State University.

Betsy earned her undergraduate degree from Vanderbilt University, and her Masters and PhD degrees in psychology, from the University of Missouri.

Her initial plans to pursue an academic career were changed when she discovered the field of human resources—a perfect fit for her academic background and professional interests. Betsy’s human resources career has spanned the nonprofit sectors of university, government and healthcare, serving in the role as Chief Human Resources Officer for over 15 years. With a focus on mission, leadership, diversity and inclusion, and the development of great places to work and thrive, Betsy has gained expertise in areas such as CEO transitions, succession planning, labor relations, board/executive relations, executive recruitment, crisis management, and organizational strategy.

From 2018 until recently Betsy served as the Sr Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer for Children’s Hospital Colorado – a large multi-site academic medical center focused on improving the health of children and consistently recognized nationally as a top ten children’s hospital. Children’s was recognized in 2024 by Forbes as #4 in the Best Places to Work category.

Betsy initially focused on total rewards and risk management, leading those functions at the University of Colorado and the state of Colorado. She went on to broader HR leadership roles at CU, culminating in the role of Chief HR Officer for the system. In 2008 Betsy returned to her graduate school alma mater and assumed the role of CHRO and General Officer of the University of Missouri system – a large 4-campus organization including an academic medical center. Her career transitioned into healthcare when she assumed the role of Vice President of Human Resources for Barnes-Jewish Hospital in St Louis, a large academic medical center, and the largest hospital in the BJC Healthcare system.

With a passion for leadership and professional development Betsy has served on national boards, councils and committees, and as a panelist and presenter at numerous national conferences. Betsy is embracing her retirement from full time work, writing, and speaking on various topics, as well as doing executive search work.
