About the Executive Summit
The inaugural ASHHRA Healthcare HR Executive Summit was held in October 2022, hosted in Savannah, Georgia. Comprised of healthcare HR executives from across the country, the intimate group of 22 participants engaged in education and open discussions on human resource trends, solutions and strategies, paired with networking opportunities with the support of generous sponsors.
The inaugural Executive Summit was a great success and yielded high attendee engagement. As a result, ASHHRA is holding two summits, allowing for twice the number of attendees to be able to participate.

Making Career Pathways Visible: A Workforce Supply Strategy for Healthcare
Every health system in this room is fighting the same fight: sustaining a workforce in a labor market that keeps getting tighter. Most of that fight runs through recruiting and retention programs. Less attention goes to something sitting underneath both, whether employees can actually see the career path in front of them.
77% of healthcare employers say they offer education benefits, but only 58% of employees know it. Half of employers admit they struggle to clearly communicate the career pathways those benefits are meant to unlock.
This session reframes career visibility as a workforce supply problem, not an engagement one. We will look at what invisible pathways cost employees personally, 59% of healthcare workers say education and skill development increase their confidence with patients and colleagues, and what they cost the organization in retention and hiring spend. Using real health system data, we will connect the dots between visibility, employee confidence, and retention, and show how systems at different scales have made internal mobility something employees can actually see and act on.
Objectives
- Diagnose where career invisibility is quietly driving turnover and external hiring costs inside your workforce.
- Distinguish between offering a pathway and making one visible, tangible, and actionable, and understand why that gap is where most internal mobility strategies quietly fail.
- Apply lessons from health systems that closed this gap, turning visibility into employee confidence and tuition programs into a genuine internal mobility pipeline.

When It’s One of Your Own: A Discussion on High-Acuity Mental Health in Health Systems
Every health system leader has lived some version of this: a valued clinician in crisis, a leader’s child in and out of the ER, or a team destabilized by a colleague’s suicide risk or substance use. These moments touch everything you own, from talent and risk to benefits spend and culture, and they rarely fit neatly into the programs designed for everyday needs. They’re also becoming more frequent, as the acuity of what the health care workforce is carrying continues to rise.
Facilitators from Lyra Health will open with brief market context, then turn the discussion to the room.
Objectives
Attendees will leave with:
- Candid read on how peer health systems are identifying high-acuity needs in your workforce, from leave of absence trends and out-of-network claims to the places it hides in plain sight.
- Practical perspective on navigating the hardest parts of these situations, including confidentiality when the employee and the health system are intertwined.
- A stronger sense of the strategic choices your peers are weighing to get ahead of rising acuity, and how they’re making the case internally.

The Missing Link: Connecting the Dots to Transform Workforce Outcomes
Healthcare’s most persistent workforce challenges are often addressed through a collection of independent parts. Recruitment focuses on new hires. Onboarding focuses on getting employees ready to start. Retention teams focus on turnover and exit interviews. Operations focuses on productivity and throughput. Each function works to improve its piece, but the greatest opportunities exist in the connections between them.
This interactive executive session will use real world healthcare case studies. We will examine how connecting talent strategy, retention intelligence, leadership practices and operational processes has produced transformational results.
Imagine leaving this session with the ability to materially change a game changing outcome within the next 30 days. Attendees will leave with strategies they can bring back to their organizations immediately from accelerating hiring and reducing turnover to decreasing agency reliance and improving organizational performance.
Objectives
- Turn Workforce Intelligence into Action.
- Leave with practical strategies and real-world case studies that can be applied immediately to accelerate hiring, improve retention, reduce agency reliance, and strengthen organizational performance.
- Identify the Missing Link: Recognize where disconnected workforce strategies may be limiting results and identify opportunities to connect recruitment, onboarding, retention, leadership, and operations to drive greater impact.

Navigating the New PBM Landscape: CAA, 340B & What’s Next for Pharmacy Benefits
Rebecca Grant, Vice President, Healthcare Markets, and Kinjal Patel, Business Development Executive, Healthcare Markets, will lead an interactive discussion on the evolving pharmacy benefits landscape for healthcare HR executives. The session opens with the CAA update passed in February 2026 — the culmination of 15 years of policy debate — and unpacks what it means for plan sponsors’ fiduciary duties, disclosure requirements, and vendor accountability. From there, the conversation shifts to the midmarket PBM space: how consolidation, transparency pressure, and new entrants have reshaped options for hospital systems. A key focus is the 340B rebate model — what it means for covered entities and its potential financial and operational impact. The discussion closes by connecting these dynamics to what employers should now demand from PBM partners, including transparency, flexible pricing, and audit rights, and how their organization’s pricing models and Illuminate platform are built to meet those demands today.
Objectives
- The CAA is no longer optional — new fiduciary and disclosure obligations mean HR leaders must actively vet PBM contracts now, not later.
- 340B impact is real and asymmetric — healthcare systems need to understand exactly how PBM rebate model changes affect their 340B savings before renewing.
- Leverage is shifting to the employer — transparent pricing and audit-ready models (like Illuminate) are becoming table stakes, not premium features.

Aligning Executive Compensation with Community Outreach and Healthcare Delivery in a Resource-Constrained Health System
This session explores how a health system can design and implement an executive compensation strategy that directly links leadership incentives to both community impact and healthcare delivery outcomes. In environments with limited financial and operational resources, traditional compensation models that focus primarily on financial performance may not fully support the organization’s mission. By incorporating measures such as patient access, population health improvement, community engagement, health equity, quality outcomes, and patient satisfaction into executive incentive plans, health systems can better align leadership behavior with organizational priorities and community needs.
The session demonstrates how a balanced compensation framework promotes accountability, encourages strategic resource allocation, and strengthens trust among patients, employees, community partners, and governing boards. It also highlights practical approaches for measuring outcomes, managing limited resources, and sustaining long-term organizational performance while advancing the mission of equitable healthcare delivery.
Objectives
- Evaluate the effectiveness of mission-driven executive compensation models by assessing how incentive structures can align leadership performance with community outreach, population health, quality of care, and health equity goals.
- Identify key performance metrics that balance financial stewardship with healthcare delivery outcomes, ensuring executives remain accountable for both organizational sustainability and community impact in resource-limited settings.
- Develop strategies for implementing and monitoring executive compensation plans that foster stakeholder trust, enhance community partnerships, improve patient outcomes, and support the long-term mission of the health system.

The Biggest Workforce Shift Isn’t Demographic—It’s Clinical: How Leading Health Systems Are Strengthening Performance and Managing Cost
As health systems prepare for the future of work, the workforce is already being reshaped by accelerating shifts in health risk and care expectations. Chronic conditions are emerging earlier, cancer incidence is rising among younger adults, women’s health remains materially underserved, and new generations are entering the workforce with different needs, preferences, and expectations for access and experience. For hospital and health system leaders, these trends are quickly becoming critical drivers of labor availability, productivity, clinician and staff burnout, retention, and total cost of care. Join us for a discussion on the workforce health trends expected to shape the next three to five years, and the strategies leading hospitals and health systems are implementing now to protect their workforce, strengthen performance, and manage cost.
Objectives

Smart Partnerships That Do More – Advancing Workforce Development Through Education
Attendees will learn how American College of Education (ACE) is helping organizations create stronger, more sustainable workforces through strategic education partnerships. ACE shares its approach to delivering affordable, flexible, and career-focused degree programs that support employee growth while addressing critical workforce challenges facing employers today.
The session highlights the connection between employee development, retention, and organizational success. ACE will demonstrates how customized partnership programs—including tuition discounts, direct billing options, cohort opportunities, and personalized academic pathways—enable employers to maximize education benefits while reducing barriers to advancement for employees and their families.
Participants will learn how ACE’s online programs in nursing, healthcare administration, public health, business, and leadership help organizations build internal talent pipelines and prepare future managers, clinical leaders, and administrators. The discussion will emphasize that investing in education not only strengthens employee engagement but also helps reduce costly turnover and recruitment challenges.
ACE will also showcase its commitment to affordability, reporting tuition costs significantly below many online competitors and a student population in which 87% graduate without debt. With more than 52,000 alumni and accredited nursing programs, ACE positions itself as a trusted workforce development partner focused on measurable outcomes for both employees and employers.
The key takeaway for HR leaders will be: smart education partnerships do more than provide degrees—they create pathways for retention, leadership development, workforce readiness, and long-term organizational success. By aligning educational opportunities with strategic talent goals, organizations can invest in their people while building a stronger future workforce.Burnout is no longer just a workforce issue; it’s a cultural one, demanding CHROs to lead beyond wellness programs and toward systemic change. In this session, we’ll explore why recovery from burnout remains elusive across health systems, the cultural blind spots that leave key staff populations unsupported, and how trust, belonging, and psychological safety must be at the center of any sustainable well-being strategy. Our Lyra Health expert through real world examples, will share what it looks like when mental health becomes a shared organizational value and how to build a culture where every staff member feels seen, supported, and able to thrive.
Objectives
- Explore how education benefits can support employee retention, engagement, and career growth while helping organizations strengthen workforce stability and reduce turnover.
- Examine strategies for expanding access to affordable education through flexible learning options, tuition assistance models, and pathways that reduce financial barriers for employees pursuing degrees and credentials.
- Identify approaches to developing internal talent pipelines by creating pathways into leadership, nursing advancement, healthcare administration, public health, and business roles that help address skill gaps and prepare future leaders.

Motivating What Matters: Connecting Workforce Strategy to Better Care
Healthcare HR leaders are navigating workforce shortages, burnout, retention pressure, culture challenges, and constant organizational change while supporting the teams responsible for delivering exceptional patient care.
But workforce strategies ultimately come to life through everyday actions across units, roles, locations, and shifts.
In this interactive executive session, attendees will explore how to create a stronger connection between organizational priorities, culture, employee behavior, and the experiences that reinforce what matters most. Using a practical healthcare-focused framework, leaders will map a current workforce priority, identify the employee and manager behaviors behind it, and examine where consistency breaks down across a 24/7 workforce.
Objectives
Connect workforce priorities such as retention, patient experience, safety, and culture to the everyday employee and manager behaviors that help move them.
Identify where consistency breaks down across shifts, roles, departments, and locations, and how leaders can reinforce what matters without adding unnecessary administrative burden.
Learn how healthcare peers are approaching workforce stability, manager effectiveness, shift equity, and measurement across complex 24/7 organizations.
